Lake Scugog Enhancment Project

Nearly 40% of all the suspended solids entering Lake Scugog through stormwater runoff are discharged via the Port Perry core to Port Perry Bay. LSEP is a lake enhancement investment targeting the Port Perry waterfront and Port Perry Bay.

The project will remove 15 acres of aquatic vegetation from the marina to Port Perry Bay, establish appropriate navigation depths in the Port Perry harbour, create a 4 acre enhanced wetland from the dredged material to filter critical outlet stormwater, build additional oil and grit separators, build a 245-foot berm with walking trail to contain the wetland complete with fishing pods.

“The ability of wetlands to regulate both water quality and quantity has resulted in them being referred to as the kidneys of the landscape”

Mitsch and Gosselink, 1993

Is The Planned Wetland Important?

The wetland will be critical to the success of LSEP. An enhanced wetland provides a sustainable method of performing water quality improvements through the absorption by plants and microorganisms of harmful nutrients and pollutants.

The LSEP wetland will filter out sediment and reduce excess nutrients at Baagwating, Casimir and Curtis Street stormwater outlets. This solution is both cost-effective and sustainable.

How Was Lake Scugog Enhancement Project Started?

The impetus for the Lake Scugog Enhancement Project (LSEP) came from the recommendations of the Lake Scugog Environmental Plan (2010) and the Port Perry Stormwater Management Plan (2013), two comprehensive studies undertaken by the Township of Scugog and Kawartha Conservation seeking
to address the degenerating impact of eutrophication on
Lake Scugog.

The Healthy Lake Scugog Steering Committee, a sub-committee to Township Council, provided a leadership role, leading to the approval by Council in January 2016 of the award to GHD Limited, experts in projects of this nature, of a Design Study and Impact Analysis focused on Port Perry Bay. Kawartha Conservation were designated as the technical resource for
the project with the Scugog Lake Stewards to provide
fundraising support.
